What is a Paleo Diet?

A paleo diet typically includes lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds - foods that in the past could be obtained by 'hunting and gathering'. A paleo diet limits foods that became common when farming emerged 10,000 years ago. The foods include dairy products, legumes and grains. 

What are the health benefits of a Paleo Diet?

Studies have shown following a Paleo diet may be linked to: 

  • Weight loss
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Improved blood lupid levels
  • Lower blood sugar levels

Examples of what can I eat on a Paleo Diet?

paleo diet means focusing eating less processed food & more natural fats & natural foods - some examples are below: 

  • Meats: Beef, Pork, Poultry - preferably lean cuts & organic
  • Fish & Shellfish
  • Eggs - try to max on x 6 a week
  • Fruit i.e. melon, mango, strawberries
  • Non starchy vegetables i.e. broccolli, cauliflower, leeks, aubergine, peppers, asparagus, mushrooms, carrots, squash, courgette, sprouts etc
  • Salad Items: Cucumber, celery, lettuce, tomato etc
  • Nuts & Seeds i.e. walnuts, cashews, almonds, pumpkin seeds etc
  • Oils i.e. olive oil, flaxseed oil 

 

If you have a good think about the above.. it doesn't really change much of what you'd perhaps classify as a 'normal' dinner i.e. meat & veg? 

Examples of what to avoid eating on a Paleo Diet?

paleo diet means you avoid eating: 

  • Sugar i.e. all forms of sweets, honey, sugar
  • Grains i.e. wheat, rice and barley
  • Highly processed Foods
  • Most dairy products i.e. milk, cheese, yogurt, butter
  • Starchy Vegetables i.e. potato's
  • Legumes i.e. Peanuts, peas and beans
  • Vegetable oils, margarine and trans-fats
  • Sugary soft drinks & fruit juices


The bit I think stands out as initially horrifying is the lack of bread 🥪, pizza 🍕, crisps, biscuits  🍥& cake 🍰.. so, if you're like me & looked at the list above and screamed in your head 'but what about snacks & treats' then check out our Paleo snack, crisp & treat options - I have tried and tested most of them and included my personal 😋 rating of each  😁


Will I lose weight on a Paleo Diet?

Due to restricting the food groups you will eat your calorie intake generally is lower, so yes, you can lose weight on a Paleo diet. As nuts and seeds can be eaten as part of a Paleo diet, if you're looking to lose weight you may want to restrict how much you eat of these as they are generally high in calories.

Due to the nature of the type of food you will eat when Paleo you are generally more full, faster which may also stop you from reaching for snacks.
