Auto Immune Protocol (A.I.P.) Diet

Basically an extension of a paleo diet albeit a stricter version.. either way going from everything to nothing is a decent challenge for anyone! AIP diet 'may' help reduce inflammation and manage symptoms of Auto Immune diseases and disorders (MS, IBD, Celiac, Arthritis etc), it could also help leaky gut. 

If you're going to do this - get advice first (from a dietitian or similar) as you don't want to reduce your food intake so much that it leaves you deficient of nutrients, nor do you want it to fail after you put in the hard graft !


What to eat during AIP Elimination Phase:

  • Bone Broth
  • Vegetables
  • Tubers (i.e. sweet potato, taro etc)
  • Probiotic rich foods (i.e kimchi, sauerkraut, pickles, kombucha etc) 
  • Minimal processed vegetable oils (i.e. avocado oil, olive oil, coconut oil etc) 

In Moderation:

 

  • Natural Sweeteners (i.e. honey, maple syrup etc) 
  • Fresh Fruit

What 'not' to eat during AIP Elimination Phase:

  • Processed and refined sugars
  • Artificial sweeteners incl. xylitol, stevia etc
  • Vegetable Oils i.e sunflower, soy bean, rapeseed etc
  • Grains i.e. rice, barley, oats, wheat etc incl. things made from them pasta, bread, cereals etc
  • Seeds & Nuts: & all things derived from them! 
  • Legumes i.e. peanuts, peas, beans, lentils etc
  • Nightshades i.e. potato, tomatos, aubergine etc
  • Eggs inc. things made with them
  • Dairy (cow, sheep & goat milk, cheese, ghee, cream etc) 
  • Coffee and Alcohol 

During Elimination Phase

AIP Re-Introduction Phase:

As the idea is to gently reintroduce certain foods to test your responses and symptoms starting off with products that hopefully have lower immune response levels seems like a good idea. So you may wish to ease back in with grain free, dairy free, low sugar snacks and foods
